LNB converter (Low-Noise Block) is a key component of every satellite installation, essential for receiving channels. It is a device mounted at the focal point of the satellite dish (that is, in the holder at the end of the arm) and performs two basic functions: it receives the very weak microwave signal reflected from the SAT dish, and then converts it to a lower frequency that can be transmitted via coaxial cable to the satellite tuner. Without a converter, satellite TV reception is not possible. The proper selection of an LNB converter is crucial for the number of connected receivers and the complexity of the installation.

Standard Converters – The Number of Users Matters

The basic division of converters depends on how many independent receivers (tuners) you want to connect to one dish. Each converter output supports one tuner, which means each user can watch a different channel at the same time.

  • LNB (1) Single: This is a single converter, ideal for installations where the signal is to go to only one TV or tuner. It is the simplest and most frequently chosen solution for small apartments.

  • LNB (2) Twin: Known as a dual converter, it allows connection of two tuners or one Twin PVR tuner (with recording and simultaneous viewing function). Ideal for a couple or a home with just a second TV.

  • LNB (4) Quad: This quad converter is a standard in single-family homes, allowing connection of four independent tuners or rooms.

  • LNB (8) Octo: The eight-output converter is a solution for large homes, supporting eight users at the same time. This is the maximum number that can be supported without the need to use a multiswitch.

Specialized Converters – Multi-Satellite Reception and Shared Installations

For more complex requirements, converters with a special design or technology are needed:

  • LNB Monoblock: This is a dual-satellite converter, ideal when you want to receive a signal from two satellites at the same time (e.g. the popular Astra and HotBird) on one dish without the need for complicated switches. The heads are integrated into one housing, which guarantees precise spacing for typical 80-90 cm dishes.

  • LNB Quatro (Multiswitch): This converter is mandatory in every shared installation. It has four outputs, but each of them provides only one type of polarization/band (e.g. V/Low, H/Low, V/High, H/High). The signal from the LNB Quatro is sent exclusively to multiswitches, which then distribute it to many subscriber sockets.

Modern construction and extensive systems require intelligent converters that save cables and make expansion easier:

  • LNB Unicable: This is a revolutionary technology, known as a single-cable converter. It enables connecting many satellite tuners using only one coaxial cable. It is an ideal solution for upgrading existing apartments and homes where it is difficult to run additional cabling, but it requires compatible tuners with the Unicable function.

  • LNB WideBand: This wideband converter is the future of shared installations. Unlike the LNB Quatro, this converter uses only two outputs (one for vertical and one for horizontal polarization), and the entire band is transmitted simultaneously. It is dedicated to working with modern Wide Band multiswitches and significantly simplifies cabling in large facilities, reducing costs and installation time.
